Water-Vapor Maser Survey for Active Galactic Nuclei: A Megamaser in NGC 6926
We made a survey of water-vapor maser emission for 93 AGNs with theNobeyama 45-m and Mopra 22-m telescopes from 1999 to 2002. A megamaserwas detected in a Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 6926, at a distance of 80Mpc, in2002 June. [Greenhill et al. (2003a) have also reported a detection ofthe megamaser at the close date.] The peak flux density was 110mJy, andthe total isotropic luminosity was 340 Lȯ. The masershows triply peaked spectrum, suggesting an edge-on disk. A narrow-linefeature of the maser components at VLSR = 6001 kms-1 was strongly variable with a time scale of a few tens ofdays, and the variation should be of intrinsic origin. We also showed apossibility of variability of water-vapor maser emission of a megamaserpreviously detected in a Seyfert/ultraluminous FIR galaxy, NGC 6240.

The Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey - V. The catalogue
We present the radial velocities and blue, optical magnitudes for all ofthe galaxies within the Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey. Thiscatalogue consists of ~2500 galaxy redshifts to a limiting apparentmagnitude of B_J⋍17 mag, covering a ~1500-deg^2 area around theSouth Galactic Pole. The galaxies in this survey were selected from theEdinburgh/Durham Southern Galaxy Catalogue and were sampled, in order ofapparent magnitude, at a rate of one galaxy in every three. Thespectroscopy was performed at the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope inAustralia using the FLAIR multi-object spectrograph. We show that ourradial velocity measurements made with this instrument have an empiricalaccuracy of +/-150 km s^-1. The observational techniques and datareduction procedures used in the construction of this survey are alsodiscussed. This survey demonstrates that the UKST can be used to make athree-dimensional map of the large-scale galaxy distribution, via aredshift survey to b_J⋍17 mag, over a wide area of the sky.

The Southern Sky Redshift Survey
We report redshifts, magnitudes, and morphological classifications for5369 galaxies with m_B <= 15.5 and for 57 galaxies fainter than thislimit, in two regions covering a total of 1.70 sr in the southerncelestial hemisphere. The galaxy catalog is drawn primarily from thelist of nonstellar objects identified in the Hubble Space TelescopeGuide Star Catalog (GSC). The galaxies have positions accurate to ~1"and magnitudes with an rms scatter of ~0.3 mag. We compute magnitudes(m_SSRS2) from the relation between instrumental GSC magnitudes and thephotometry by Lauberts & Valentijn. From a comparison with CCDphotometry, we find that our system is homogeneous across the sky andcorresponds to magnitudes measured at the isophotal level ~26 magarcsec^-2. The precision of the radial velocities is ~40 km s^-1, andthe redshift survey is more than 99% complete to the m_SSRS2 = 15.5 maglimit. This sample is in the direction opposite that of the CfA2; incombination the two surveys provide an important database for studies ofthe properties of galaxies and their large-scale distribution in thenearby universe. New active galactic nuclei detected in ROSAT All Sky Survey galaxies. I. Verification of selection strategy
We present the first results of a program to identify so far unknownactive nuclei (AGN) in galaxies. Candidate galactic nuclei have beenselected for optical spectroscopy from a cross-correlation of the ROSATAll Sky Survey (RASS) bright source catalog with optical galaxycatalogs. A high X-ray flux has been used as pointer to galaxies with ahigh probability to contain active nuclei. Only galaxies have beenaccepted for the program for which no activity was noted in NED. Formany of the galaxies no radial velocity was reported before. The opticalspectra demonstrate that the galaxies cover a redshift range of 0.014 to0.13 and that most of them host active nuclei. For 75% of the 33candidates the X-ray emission is caused by the AGN. In addition severalof the remaining candidates host Seyfert 2/LINER nuclei that, however,most certainly cannot explain the X-ray emission alone. Three BL Lacobjects have been detected serendipitously in galaxy fields that havebeen followed up by short ROSAT HRI observations to confirm the X-raygalaxy identification with improved position accuracy and point responsefunction. The sources show X-ray to radio flux ratios typical for X-rayselected BL Lac objects. The results presented in the paper prove theselection strategy as very successful to detect previously unknown AGNof all Seyfert 1 types in nearby galaxies encouraging the extension ofthis program. The detection of new nearby AGN will be used to initiate adetailed investigation of their multi-wavelength properties and acomparison with the more distant AGN population. based partially onobservations collected at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla,Chile

Optical Spectroscopic Properties of a Sample of Interacting Galaxies
We present spectroscopic observations of 83 galaxies from a sample of 49pairs of optically selected interacting galaxies, most of thempreviously unobserved. These pairs consist of a main galaxy (componentA) and a companion (component B) that has about half or less thediameter of component A. From our spectra we determine that 27 galaxiesform truly physical pairs and seven are apparent pairs, for theremaining pairs we could only extract the spectra of the A components.The spectra of the physical pairs were classified into four groupsaccording to the emission-line spectra observed in each component. Theseclassifications were made because the sample exhibits a very large rangeof spectral properties, ranging from well-evolved stellar populations(older than 200 Myr) to emission-line--dominated starburst systems (80Myr or younger). In general terms, these spectral types are wellcorrelated with the morphological types of the galaxies. However, wefind no evidence of correlation of the equivalent width of H alpha + [NII] emission lines with the degree of the interaction or with the blueabsolute magnitude of the components. From the data it is alsodetermined that the average EW(H alpha + [N II]) for the physical pairsis 37 A for the A components and 54 A for the B components. For thegalaxies that form apparent pairs we obtain EW(H alpha + [N II]) = 27 A,confirming that physical pairs have higher mean star formation ratesthan isolated galaxies. This enhancement of the star formation activityis more likely to take place in both galaxies, but the strength of theactivity seems to be higher in the B components. The mean observedvalues of EW(H alpha + [N II]) are comparable with those observed in asample of strongly interacting or merging galaxies. On the other hand,we do not find the excess of Seyfert-type nuclei previously reported instudies of similar samples of galaxies.

The Catalog of Southern Ringed Galaxies
The Catalog of Southern Ringed Galaxies (CSRG) is a comprehensivecompilation of diameters, axis ratios, relative bar position angles, andmorphologies of inner and outer rings, pseudorings, and lenses in 3692galaxies south of declination -17 deg. The purpose of the catalog is toevaluate the idea that these ring phenomena are related to orbitalresonances with a bar or oval in galaxy potentials. The catalog is basedon visual inspection of most of the 606 fields of the Science ResearchCouncil (SRC) IIIa-J southern sky survey, with the ESO-B, ESO-R, andPalomar Sky surveys used as auxiliaries when needed for overexposed coreregions. The catalog is most complete for SRC fields 1-303 (mostly southof declination -42 deg). In addition to ringed galaxies, a list of 859mostly nonringed galaxies intended for comparison with other catalogs isprovided. Other findings from the CSRG that are not based on statisticsare the identification of intrinsic bar/ring misalignment; bars whichunderfill inner rings; dimpling of R'1pseudorings; pointy, rectangular, or hexagonal inner or outer ringshapes; a peculiar polar-ring-related system; and other extreme examplesof spiral structure and ring morphology.

CO in paired galaxies: Star formation induced by gas flow
We present CO(1-0) observations of 51 galaxies from anoptically-selected smaple of binaries in the southern hemisphere. Datawere taken with the SEST 15m telescope (44 in beam). CO emission wasdetected from 33 galaxies, corresponding to a 65% detection rate. Thereis a strong correlation between the normalized CO and FIR luminosities.As already noted in other samples, the far infrared luminosity L(FIR)normalized to the blue luminosity and the star formation efficiency, astraced by the L(FIR)/M(H2) ratio, are enhanced, suggesting a tidaltrigger for the star-formation. The FIR luminosity normalized to theoptical surface is also enhanced. The CO luminosity is enhanced intidally perturbed objects, suggesting that the amount of molecular gasis higher in the interacting objetcs. The L(FIR)/L(B), and L(CO)/L(B)ratios correlate, although weakly, with the component separation in thebinaries, while the L(FIR)/M(H2) does not. This suggests that one of themain phenomena triggering star formation is the enhancement in the totalamount of molecular gas. The gas inflow is probably due to gravitationaltorques produced by tidal interaction. Our observations show thatinteracting galaxies have both a higher star formation efficiency and alarger mass of molecular gas available to fuel star formation.

Southern Sky Redshift Survey - The catalog
The catalog of radial velocities for galaxies which comprise thediameter-limited sample of the Southern Sky Redshift Survey ispresented. It consolidates the data of observations carried out at theLas Campanas Observatory, Observatorio Nacional, and South AfricanAstronomical Observatory. The criteria used for the sample selection aredescribed, as well as the observational procedures and the techniqueutilized to obtain the final radial velocities. The intercomparisonbetween radial velocity measurements from different telescopes indicatesthat the final data base is fairly homogeneous with a typical error ofabout 40 km/s. The sample is at present 90 percent complete, and themissing galaxies are predominantly objects with very low surfacebrightness for which it is very difficult to obtain optical redshifts.

The plane W(Na I) X W(Mg I) - Effects of interstellar Na I in a sample of southern galaxies
Galaxy spectra from a subsample of the Southern Sky Redshift Survey databank were used to study the equivalent width plane for the lines Na Ilambda 5893 A vs Mg I lambda 5175 A. An estimate of how important thecontribution of the interstellar gas for the sodium line is compared tothat of the stellar population. The sample is made up of galaxies withmorphological types from E to Sc and are distributed up to radialvelocities of 25,000 km/s, most of them smaller than 15,000 km/s. Mostearly type galaxies with dust lanes, particularly nearly edge-on So's,present an enhancement of the Na I line. Inclined spiral galaxies tendto present enhanced Na I with respect to face-on spirals. This tendency,previously found in a smaller sample of galaxies limited to V equal toor less than 6000 km/s, is now confirmed for more distant ones. In thelarge velocity sample it shows the global bulge rather than the verynucleus; the persistence of the effect suggests that the scale height ofthe gas layer in the central disk can reach a considerable fraction ofthe bulge radius.

Associations between quasi-stellar objects and galaxies
A table is presented here listing all close pairs of QSOs and galaxiesthat were found in a computer-aided search of catalogs of QSOs andbright galaxies and an extensive search of the literature. There is alarge excess of pairs with separations of 2 arcmin lor less, or about 60kpc, over the numbers expected if the configurations were accidental.The angular separation for 392 pairs adds to the evidence for physicalassociation, and it is shown that selection effects are not important. Ageneral rule is stated that QSOs tend to lie in the vicinity of normalgalaxies much more often than is expected by chance whether or not thegalaxies and the QSOs have the same redshifts. It is emphasized thatthis rule cannot be explained in terms of gravitational microlensing,and it is concluded that some part of the redshift of all classes ofactive nuclei is not associated with the expansion of the universe.

Redshifts for 228 southern galaxies
In this paper, new redshifts are presented for 228 galaxies locatedsouth of declination -30 deg. The observations were made with aphoton-counting Reticon detector on the Observatorio Nacional (ON)60-in. telescope. The detector is identical to the one used at MountHopkins for the CfA Redshift Survey, and the redshifts were derivedusing the same data-analysis system. A preliminary comparison withpublished 21-cm redshifts indicates that the velocities have azero-point offset of about -4 km/s, with a typical uncertainty of 40km/s. The observations reported here are the initial results of theON-CfA Redshift Survey currently being undertaken in the southernhemisphere.
