CNO in evolved intermediate mass stars
In order to investigate the possible influence of rotation on theefficiency of the first dredge-up we determined atmospheric parameters, masses, and abundances of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in a sample ofevolved intermediate mass stars. We used high resolution spectra andconducted a model atmosphere analysis. The abundances were calculatedthrough spectral synthesis and compared to the predictions of rotatingand non-rotating evolutionary models. Almost all those objects in oursample where carbon and nitrogen abundances could be determined showsigns of internal mixing. The stars, however, seem to be mixed todifferent extents. Among the mixed stars we identify five in our samplewith abundances in agreement with the non-rotating models, four starsthat seem to be mixed beyond that, and one star that seems to beslightly less mixed than predicted for the first dredge-up. There arealso five stars that seem to be slightly more mixed than expected, buttheir abundances are in marginal agreement with both rotating andnon-rotating models. Such differences in the extent of the mixing arenot predicted by the standard models and imply the action of othermixing mechanisms than solely the convective dredge-up. We alsoidentified for the first time an important correlation between the [N/C]ratio and the stellar mass.

Large and kinematically unbiased samples of G- and K-type stars. II - Observations of evolved stars in the Bright Star sample. III - Evolved young disk stars in the Bright Star sample
Four color and RI observations were obtained for a large sample ofG-type and K-type stars in the Bright Star Catalogue. Data are firstpresented for 110 evolved stars. Photometry of evolved young diskpopulation stars have then been calibrated for luminosity, reddening, and metallicity on the basis of results for members of the Hyades andSirius superclusters. New DDO results are given for 120 stars.

Metal-abundance determinations from near-UV spectra - Application to the mean metal abundance of M32
Near-UV spectra for the nucleus of the elliptical galaxy M32 and for 60field stars have been obtained which cover the wavelength interval3200-3900 A at a resolution of 2.5 A FWHM. A depression in thepseudocontinuum shortward of 3504 A is found to be quite sensitive tometal abundance. The results indicate that the luminosity-weighted meanmetal Fe/H abundance ratio for M32 at 3500 A is about -0.1, and that thegiant branch contributes slightly less than 30 percent of the light at4000 A. The luminosity-weighted N/Fe abundance ratio is shown to beapproximately equal to that of solar neighborhood stars.

E. W. Fick Observatory stellar radial velocity measurements. I - 1976-1984
Stellar radial velocity observations made with the large vacuumhigh-dispersion photoelectric radial velocity spectrometer at FickObservatory are reported. This includes nearly 2000 late-type starsobserved during 585 nights. Gradual modifications to this instrumentover its first eight years of operation have reduced the observationalerror for high-quality dip observations to + or - 0.8 km/s.

Red horizontal-branch stars in the galactic disk
A quantitative, three-dimensional spectral classification systemdeveloped by Rose (1984), which uses 2.5-A resolution spectra in theblue, has been used to identify a class of red horizontal branch (RHB)stars in the Galactic disk that are similar to those in the 'metal rich'globular cluster M 71. The RHB are denoted as evolved stars by their SrII 4077 line, and are distinguished from post-main sequence starsevolving through the same region of the HR diagram on the basis of theunique appearance of their CN 3883 and 4216 A bands. The RHB starsconsitute at least 5 percent of the entire giant branch population ofthe disk.

The reddening, metal abundance, and luminosity of high-luminosity G-type stars
The abundance parameters of the sample of 100 G-type bright giants andsupergiants whose photometry is presently discussed indicate Fe/H valuesof between about + 0.6 dex and the solar value, using a preliminarycalibration of the photometric indices. The few long period Cepheidsthat are not heavily blanketed F-type stars give reddening values thatare in agreement with current results from other methods of analysis.Supergiants show no clear gradients in the galactic distribution ofabundances, and those nearest the sun range from an Fe/H of about + 0.3dex, for members of the Pleiades Group, to near solar abundance. A smallsample of Large Magellanic Cloud supergiants shows nearly the same rangein metal abundance as the galactic stars, and gives a modulus for thisCloud of 18.3 + or - 0.20 mag.

Radial velocities of southern HR stars. II
Fick Observatory's second major installment of radial-velocitymeasurements of bright southern stars is presented. This includes 373radial-velocity measurements for 90 stars which were obtained betweenJanuary 1978 and June 1981. Fifteen new possible velocity variables andone new double-line spectroscopic binary (HD 1782) have been detected.Subsequent velocity measurements of stars from the first southern HRstudy (Beavers and Eitter, 1980) found that (1) two stars (HR 0745 andHR 5428), originally classified as possible variables, are actuallyconstant velocity variables, and that (2) HR 0953 is a definite velocityvariable covering a range of at least -1 to +14 km/sec. This study, whencombined with the earlier southern HR observations and those reported byGriffin (1972), result in a total of 280 HR objects with newradial-velocity determinations.
