High and intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of Be stars 4481 lines
We present an atlas of Hγ , He i lambda 4471 and Mg ii lambda 4481line profiles obtained in a 10 year observation period of 116 Be stars,which enabled many of them to be observed at quite different emissionepochs. From the best fit of the observed He i lambda 4471 line profileswith non-LTE, uniform (Teff,log g) and full limb-darkenedmodel line profiles, we determined the V sin i of the program stars. Toaccount, to some degree, for the line formation peculiarities related tothe rapid rotation-induced non-uniform distributions of temperature andgravity on the stellar surface, the fit was achieved by considering(Teff,log g) as free parameters. This method produced V sin iestimations that correlate with the rotational velocities determined bySlettebak (1982) within a dispersion sigma <= 30 km s-1and without any systematic deviation. They can be considered as given inthe new Slettebak's et al. (1975) system. Only 13 program stars havediscrepant V sin i values. In some objects, this discrepancy could beattributed to binary effects. Using the newly determined V sin iparameters, we found that the ratio of true rotational velocitiesV/Vc of the program Be stars has a very low dispersion aroundthe mean value. Assuming then that all the stars are rigid rotators withthe same ratio V(/lineω)/Vc, we looked for the value of/line ω that better represents the distribution of V sini/Vc for randomly oriented rotational axes. We obtained/lineω = 0.795. This value enabled us to determine the probableinclination angle of the stellar rotation axis of the program stars. Inthe observed line profiles of Hγ , He i lambda 4471, Mg ii lambda4481 and Fe ii lambda 4351 we measured several parameters related to theabsorption and/or emission components, such as: equivalent width,residual emission and/or absorption intensity, FWHM, emission peakseparations, etc. The parameters related to the Hγ line emissionprofiles were used to investigate the structure of the nearbyenvironment of the central star. From the characteristics of thecorrelations between these quantities and the inferred inclinationangle, we concluded that in most of cases the Hγ line emissionforming regions may not be strongly flattened. Using a simplerepresentation of the radiation flux emitted by the star+envelopesystem, we derived first order estimates of physical parameterscharacterizing the Hγ line emission formation region. Thus, weobtained that the total extent of the Hγ region is Rf=~ 2.5 +/- 1.0 R* and that the density distribution in theselayers can be mimicked with a power law rho ~ R-alpha , wherealpha =2.5+2.2-0.6. The same approach enabled usto estimate the optical depth of the Hγ line emission formationregion. From its dependence with the aspect angle, we concluded thatthese regions are caracterized by a modest flattening and that the rho(equator)/rho (pole) density contrast of the circumstellar envelope nearthe star should be two orders of magnitude lower than predicted bymodels based on a priori disc-shaped circumstellar envelopes. We foundthat the separation between the emission peaks, Deltap, andthe full width at half maximum, Delta 1/2, of the Hγline emission are not only sensitive to kinematic effects, but to lineoptical depth as well. This finding agrees with previous theoreticalpredictions and confirms that Huang's (1972) relation overestimates theextent of the Hγ line emission formation region. Statistical analysis of intrinsic polarization, IR excess and projected rotational velocity distributions of classical Be stars
We present the results of statistical analyses of a sample of 627 Bestars. The parameters of intrinsic polarization (p*),projected rotational velocity (v sin i), and near IR excesses have beeninvestigated. The values of p* have been estimated for a muchlarger and more representative sample of Be stars (~490 objects) thanpreviously. We have confirmed that most Be stars of early spectral typehave statistically larger values of polarization and IR excesses incomparison with the late spectral type stars. It is found that thedistributions of p* diverge considerably for the differentspectral subgroups. In contrast to late spectral types (B5-B9.5), thedistribution of p* for B0-B2 stars does not peak at the valuep*=0%. Statistically significant differences in the meanprojected rotational velocities (/line{vsin i}) are found for differentspectral subgroups of Be stars in the sense that late spectral typestars (V luminosity class) generally rotate faster than early types, inagreement with previously published results. This behaviour is, however,not obvious for the III-IV luminosity class stars. Nevertheless, thecalculated values of the ratio vt/vc of the truerotational velocity, vt, to the critical velocity forbreak-up, vc, is larger for late spectral type stars of allluminosity classes. Thus, late spectral type stars appear to rotatecloser to their break-up rotational velocity. The distribution of nearIR excesses for early spectral subgroups is bi-modal, the position ofthe second peak displaying a maximum value E(V-L)~ 1 . m 3for O-B1.5 stars, decreasing to E(V-L)~0. m8 for intermediatespectral types (B3-B5). It is shown that bi-modality disappears for latespectral types (B6-B9.5). No correlations were found betweenp* and near IR excesses and between E(V-L) and vsin i for thedifferent subgroups of Be stars. In contrast to near IR excesses, arelation between p* and far IR excesses at 12 mu m is clearlyseen. A clear relation between p* and vsin i (as well asbetween p* and /line{vsin i}/vc) is found by thefact that plots of these parameters are bounded by a ``triangular"distribution of p*: vsin i, with a decrease of p*towards very small and very large vsin i (and /line{vsini}/vc) values. The latter behaviour can be understood in thecontext of a larger oblateness of circumstellar disks for the stars witha rapid rotation. From the analysis of correlations between differentobservational parameters we conclude that circumstellar envelopes forthe majority of Be stars are optically thin disks with the range of thehalf-opening angle of 10degr

Spectroscopy and Time Variability of Absorption Lines in the Direction of the Vela Supernova Remnant
We present high-resolution (R~75,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N~100) CaII λ3933.663 and Na I λλ5889.951, 5895.924 spectraof 68 stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant. The spectracomprise the most complete high-resolution, high S/N optical survey ofearly-type stars in this region of the sky. A subset of the sight lineshas been observed at multiple epochs, 1993/1994 and 1996. Of the 13stars observed twice, seven have spectra revealing changes in theequivalent width and/or velocity structure of lines, most of which arisefrom remnant gas. Such time variability has been reported previously forthe sight lines toward HD 72089 and HD 72997 by Danks & Sembach andfor HD 72127 by Hobbs and coworkers. We have confirmed the ongoing timevariability of these spectra and present new evidence of variability inthe spectra of HD 73658, HD 74455, HD 75309, and HD 75821. We havetabulated Na I and Ca II absorption-line information for the sight linesin our sample to serve as a benchmark for further investigations of thedynamics and evolution of the Vela SNR. Based on observations obtainedat the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile.

A Second Catalog of Orbiting Astronomical Observatory 2 Filter Photometry: Ultraviolet Photometry of 614 Stars
Ultraviolet photometry from the Wisconsin Experiment Package on theOrbiting Astronomical Observatory 2 (OAO 2) is presented for 614 stars.Previously unpublished magnitudes from 12 filter bandpasses withwavelengths ranging from 1330 to 4250 Å have been placed on thewhite dwarf model atmosphere absolute flux scale. The fluxes wereconverted to magnitudes using V=0 for F(V)=3.46x10^-9 ergs cm^-2 s^-1Å^-1, or m_lambda=-2.5logF_lambda-21.15. This second catalogeffectively doubles the amount of OAO 2 photometry available in theliterature and includes many objects too bright to be observed withmodern space observatories.

Towards understanding rapid line-profile and light variations of early-type stars. 3. Some thoughts and reflections
The current situation in the research of rapid line-profile and lightvariations of early-type stars is critically reviewed. It is suggestedthat the ultimate understanding of the physical processes causing thesevariations can only come from an open-minded and complex approach to theproblem and from systematic observational effort. It is argued that theresults of the search for periodicities in the complicated variations ofthese objects depend critically on whether the method used isappropriate to the real physical situation. The danger of detection of afalse multiperiodicity is pointed out for two particular situations: (i)a single-periodic signal which undergoes slow periodic change, e.g., dueto the light time effect in a binary system, and (ii) a single-periodicsignal with a complicated phase curve (a model of not exactlyequidistant corotating spokes). It is argued that the observed rapidvariations need not be due to classical non-radial pulsations but mayarise from more complicated velocity fields in the stellar atmospheresand/or mantles. Two early-type stars, ěp and zeta Oph, arediscussed in detail. It is argued that both may be the cases where thevariations are caused by corotating structures slightly above thestellar photosphere. For ěn, the pattern of the variations canalso be affected by the motion of the star in a binary orbit. For zetaOph, a double-wave light curve with the corotation period of 0. (v {r) md}64 (suggested by the author earlier for the line-profile variations)was found from Hipparcos V photometry and its presence can also besuspected in other existing photometric data and in the recurrence timesof the narrow features seen in the UV spectra.

The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright OB-type stars.
For the detailed statistical analysis of the X-ray emission of hot starswe selected all stars of spectral type O and B listed in the Yale BrightStar Catalogue and searched for them in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Inthis paper we describe the selection and preparation of the data andpresent a compilation of the derived X-ray data for a complete sample ofbright OB stars.

Tests of the Pulsation and Starspot Models for the Periodic Be-Stars

High-resolution spectroscopy of southern and equatorial Be stars: flux excess at λ4471 A.
We present a catalogue of high-resolution He I 4471, Mg II 4481 andHγ line profiles observed simultaneously for 37 southern andequatorial Be stars. In this paper we focus on the He I 4471 line, whichis studied using non-LTE model line profiles. A systematic difference isfound between the observed and the theoretical He I 4471 line equivalentwidths. This difference strongly correlates with the Hγ emissionand we interpret it as being due mainly to the veiling effect producedby the continuum emission excess originating in the circumstellarenvelope. To determine the continuum flux excess we use two methods. Onemethod enables us to obtain simultaneously the V sin i parameter. Theflux excess we determined is overestimated by about 9% on average,because in the line profile analysis we neglected the gravity darkeningeffect due to stellar rotation. We find that 14 program stars presenttwo possible solutions for V sin i. The second solution is, on average,14% smaller and produces a small residual or emission-like differencebetween the observed He I 4471 line profile and the model profile.

On the rotation properties of Be stars and their envelopes.
We present the results of low resolution spectroscopy (4A) obtained atCTIO for a sample of 42 Be, 4 B and 3 O stars covering theλ3700-7000A spectral range. Equivalent widths of the Balmer lineswere measured up to H_10_. We also give the V/R state of the Hαemission line. In addition, the peak separation and the width at thebase of the Hβ and Hγ emission lines are tabulated for atotal of 243 medium resolution (1A) spectra of 51 southern Be starstaken at the Manuel Foster Observatory, Chile. We analyzed our Hαequivalent widths (Wα) together with published data for a total of122 Be and 2 Oe stars. An upper limit of Wα increasing with theprojected rotational velocity vsini is shown by the data. The Wαvalues depend strongly on spectral type, being lower for later-type Bestars. This could indicate that the maximum strength of emission dependsmainly on the spectral type and rotation velocity. The relation betweenWα(max) and vsini, together with the observed excess in number oflow vsini Be stars and the reported anti-correlation between photometricperiod and vsini give evidence for a considerable range of the truerotation velocities of Be stars: definitely there are intrinsically slowrotators among them. However, our results could also be interpreted interms of anisotropic Hα emission coming from the disk. Theanalysis of the net equivalent widths and peak separations of Hαdouble emission line profiles strongly favor a disk type emittingenvelope with a r^-j^ rotation law with j=1.4+/-0.2 which do not dependon the spectral subtype. This result is interpreted as evidence ofradial motions in the envelopes of Be stars. The mean radial extensionsof the regions which emit Balmer lines were determined to range between30% (H_10_) and 60% (Hβ) of the Hα emitting envelope in thecase j=1. The mean electron density within the envelope has been foundto vary only by a factor of 4. We compare our results with earlierinvestigations.

Intensive photometry of southern Be variables. II - Summer objects
Results are presented of photometric campaign on some bright southern Bestars to search for periodic light variations. In order to obtain goodphase coverage, many observations were conducted from two sites withdifferent longitudes: ESO and SAAO. A large fraction of early-Be starsare found to be variable with periods close to or equal to theirrotational periods. Particular attention is devoted to the late-Bestars. Unlike the hotter members of this class, the late-Be stars do notseem to have detectable periodic light variations except for one or twostars of very small amplitude.

Determination of Be-Star Parameters from Uvby-Beta Photometry and Hα Equivalent Widths

Short-period variability in Be stars
A highly significant correlation is found between the projectedrotational velocities and the photometric periods of Be stars. It isshown that this correlation may be readily understood if the photometricperiod is equated with the rotational period. If the nonradial pulsationhypothesis (NRP) is correct, g-modes with radial order exceeding 50 mustbe involved. According to current NRP theory, these results indicatethat the Be stars rotate like solid bodies. On the basis of some recentobservations which show that considerable magnetic activity is presentand a particular episode in the Be star Kappa CMa, it is suggested thatNRP is unlikely to be the cause of low-order periodic variations in Bestars. A model of rotational modulation caused by active areas isproposed.

Spectroscopy of southern Be stars 1984-1987
The 93-cm Manuel Foster Observatory telescope in Chile has been used toobtain 919 spectrograms of 85 southern Be III-V stars. Balmeremission-lines (mainly H-beta) were noted in 74 percent of the stars,and Fe-II emission in 48 percent of them. Variations noted include rapidV/R variations of HR 1956, a primary shell phase of HR 2142, a shellphase of HR 2356, a transitory emission state of HR 2745, and thedisappearance of the H-beta emission of HR 5193.

Optical and infrared continua of southern Be stars
For 46 bright classical early Be-type stars in the equatorial andsouthern sky, ground-based optical and IR broadband photometry in theUBV and JHKLMN bands (at wavelengths in the range of 0.36-10.2 microns)performed in 1982 is presented. The results of space-borne IRASphotometry obtained for many of them in 1983 at wavelengths of 12, 25,and 60 microns are also considered. It is shown that the maximumcontribution of circumstellar envelopes to observed (B-V) reddening inBe stars amounts to 0.10 m, and that the maximum increase of visualstellar magnitudes due to the addition of free-bound and free-freeemission is about 0.15 m.

Is the Be star HR 9070 actually pulsating?
New photometric observations on the short-period Be variable HR 9070 arepresented which show that the light maxima can be predicted by a givenephemeris. Analysis using a 0.3-day period or a double-wave 0.6-dayperiod curve results in the same rms error, hence equal probabilities.Spectrography suggests large RV discontinuities in the components ofH-alpha, superimposed on smooth variations possibly correlated with theshortest period. Depending on the actual solution, pulsation or rotationmay be invoked. The shortest periodic Be stars show periods longer thanthe classical Beta CMa pulsating variables, so unusual pulsation modesshould be considered. If rotation of a star with spots on its surfaceaccounts for the variations, an exclusion mechanism between Beta CMa andBe phenomena must exist, probably as a function of rotation.

A photometric survey of the bright southern Be stars
Repeated UBV photometric measurements were made of the 86 bright Bestars south of declination -20 deg, and a network of comparison starswas set up. From a statistical study of the differential photometry itwas found that short- or intermediate-term variability seems to beoccurring in about half of the Be stars, and to be more evident in thestars of earlier spectral type. It was also possible to identify 11individual short- or intermediate-term variables. Four of these (all ofearly B spectral type) appear to exhibit significant variability on atime-scale of a day or less. More intensive observations of one of thesestars, 28 Omega CMA, indicate short-term variations consistent with thepublished spectroscopic period of 1.37 day.

Measurements of Balmer emission line profiles for southern Be stars. III - New data and radial velocities
The results of an analyses of more than 500 H alpha, H beta and H gammaline profiles from 55 bright Be and mostly early type Be shell-typestars over the period 1980-83 are reported. Thephotoelectrically-determined spectra were reduced for equivalent widthsand half-widths at different epochs, 200 Balmer line profiles andvariations, and radial velocities. The data supported a rotating diskmodel and a functional relationship between the equivalent width and theenvelope diameter. Electron scattering at H alpha may have produced Halpha emission line half widths which were predominantly larger than Hbeta lines. Persistent asymmetries of particular Balmer emission linesand positive Balmer progressions of the radial velocity were taken toindicate a phase of continuous inflow through the envelope. Details ofthe observed emissions of each star are discussed.

A catalog of selected compact radio sources for the construction of an extragalactic radio/optical reference frame
A catalog of 234 strong compact extragalactic radio sources that displayoptical counterparts is presented. This catalog identifies proposedsources for establishing an almost inertial reference frame againstwhich the motions of the earth, solar system, galactic objects, andspacecraft may be measured. This catalog also defines those sources forwhich precise optical positions should be determined in order to relatethis reference frame with the optical FK 5 fundamental system. Theaccuracy of the radio source positions of these sources is not greaterthan 0.1 arcsec with the majority not greater than 0.01 arcsec. Furtherrefinement to not greater than 0.005 arcsec by future observations isexpected soon.

UBV photometry for southern OB stars
New UBV photometry of 1227 OB stars in the southern Milky Way ispresented. For 1113 of these stars, MK spectral types have been reportedpreviously in a comprehensive survey to B = 10.0 mag.

Far ultraviolet colors of B and Be stars
A far-UV color index, G, which is free of interstellar reddening effectsis applied to TD-1 satellite observations of B and Be stars listed inthe catalogs of Jamar et al. (1976) and Macau-Hercot et al. (1978). Theexpressions defining G(in terms of the wavelengths 146, 235, and 274 nm)and the S70 index of spectral type are set forth. Tables of mean andindividual-star G and S70 indices and plots of G versus S70, Delta-Gversus spectral type, Delta-G versus H-alpha and H-beta intensity, and Gversus V(sin i) are presented and discussed. The Be stars are classifiedas strong if they show strong Balmer emission, some Paschen and Fe IIemission, and IR excess; otherwise they are 'weak'. Weak Be stars arefound to have G similar to that of B stars, while G in strong Be starsis either much more negative or much less negative than in the B stars.No correlation is found between G and V(sin i) for either B or Be stars.

Optical eclipses and precession effects in the X-ray binary system HD 77581=4U 0900-40
Results of an analysis of multiyear series of photometric observationsof the X-ray binary system HD 77581 are presented. It is shown that thesystem is an eclipsing variable in the optical range and displaysregular long-period variability in the shape and amplitude of theoptical light curves with a period of 93.3 days, which may be connectedwith phenomena in the system. It is also shown that the amplitude of theellipsoidality effect of the visible star is about 0.04 mag in the HD77581 system, with the total amplitude of optical variability reaching0.09 mag. The eclipses are caused by gas streams and by the accretionstructure, whose orientation in the binary system varies with theprecession period of the visible star. The relatively small amplitude ofthe ellipsoidality effect corresponds to the incomplete filling of itsRoche lobe by the visible star. The mass of the neutron star isestimated at 1.6 + or - 0.3 solar masses.

List of 333 variable, microvariable or suspected variable stars detected in the Geneva photometry
A list is presented of 333 stars, excluded from the GCVS and itssupplements, whose probability of variability ranges from high tocertain. The standard deviations observed in the V magnitude togetherwith the known spectral types, however, only allow speculation as to thetype of variable in question pending supplementary observations whichreveal the individual characteristics of these stars.

Infrared photometry of southern Be stars
Infrared broadband photometry in the JHKLM bands is presented for 46bright southern early-type emission-line stars, and is compared toBalmer emission line strengths measured for the same stars at closelyneighboring epochs. For Be stars earlier than about B6e, infraredexcesses measured by the J-M color index are strongly correlated to theequivalent widths of H-alpha emission lines, which confirms theinterpretation of infrared excesses in early-type Be stars ashydrogen-free-free emission from circumstellar envelopes. Timevariations are derived and discussed, and it is concluded that infraredand light variations of early-type Be stars are due to variations ofdensity and the extent of the circumstellar envelope around the stars.

Interstellar gas in the GUM Nebula
A survey of the interstellar gas near the Gum Nebula by opticalobservation of 67 stars at Ca II, 42 stars at Na I, and 14 stars in theUV with the Copernicus satellite provided radial velocities and columndensities for all resolved absorption components. Velocity dispersionsfor gas in the Gum Nebula are not significantly larger than in thegeneral interstellar medium; the ionization structure is predominantlythat of an H II region with moderately high ionization. Denser, morehighly ionized clouds are concentrated toward the Gum Nebula; theseclouds do not show the anomalously high ionization observed in the Velaremnant clouds.

The VELA star cloud. I - NGC 2547, TR 10, the Gamma Velorum system, and bright stars
The first results of an intermediate-band, large-scale photometricsurvey of the Vela star cloud are discussed. Attention is given to theluminosity and reddening, as well as the apparent or proper motions ofall the CPD stars near NGC 2547, the brightest stars in Trumpler 10, arandom selection of stars in the region of Gamma Velorum, and the HRstars. The similarity of the Alpha Persei cluster with the clusters inthe Vela sheet is shown, and it is found that the Vela sheet, at leastover the region surveyed, is nearly perpendicular to the line of sight.The probability is demonstrated that a thin sheet of coeval (2.5 x 10 tothe 7th yr) stars, some 425 pc distant and with a similar metalabundance, lies in front of a dense dark cloud.

The photometric behavior of Be Stars
Photometric data are presented for 76 Be stars observed in UBV and inthe Balmer lines H-alpha, H-beta, and H-gamma. An ultraviolet excess,derived from the Q value, appears as a common feature for nearly all thestars. From a statistical study of the data, the percentages ofvariability are: 77 percent in V, 48 percent in B-V, and 68 percent inU-B. The amounts of emission in the alpha and beta indices are computed.It is demonstrated that both emission indices are very well correlatedwith the spectroscopic emission features, their equivalent widths, andpossibly also the ultraviolet excess. The correlation of the standarddeviation of the V magnitude with the projected rotational velocity isin agreement with a model in which the Balmer line emission is due to agaseous ring. The observed beta values corrected for the emissionindices become good indicators of the absolute magnitudes, as isconfirmed by a sample of Be stars known to be members of clusters andassociations. Some properties of the galactic distribution of the Bestars are derived.
