Precise equatorial coordinates of double and multiple systems - an astronomical support to the HIPPARCOS mission Results are presented on determinations of precise positions (to theaccuracy required for their possible inclusion in the Hipparcos InputCatalogue) of 623 double and multiple stars (126 of them newlydiscovered) from the measurement of 39 plates taken at the ESO and theAstronomical Observatory of Torino, obtained between 1984 and 1987. Thetable includes the index number, the name of the discoverer, binarycomponent according to the designation by the Catalogue de Composantesd'etoiles Doubles et Multiples (CCDM), the magnitude of the componentsas given in the CCDM, epoch of observation, right ascension referred tothe J2000.0 equinox, declination, position angle referred to the J2000.0North Pole, angular separation, and DM and ADS numbers.
| Maximum separations among cataloged binaries The paper classifies many of the widest common-motion binaries listed inthe Aitken catalog and list 72 physical pairs with known photoelectricphotometry, 31 physical pairs without good photometry, and 27 opticalpairs. As a function of primary types, the physical systems have upperlimits to their separations that are exceeded by some of the opticalpairs. The fact that optical pairs occur with larger separations impliesthat the limits are real ones and not just catalog limitations. Thoselimits (in AU) are expressed by 2500 M1 exp 1.54 for B5-KO main-sequenceprimaries. The same limits hold for the Trapezium and hierarchicalsystems studied previously.
| New UBVRI photometry for 900 supergiants A description is presented of the results obtained in connection with asystematic program of supergiant photometry on the Johnson UBVRI system.During the eight years after the start of the program, almost 1000 starshave been observed, about 400 three or more times each. The originalselection of stars used the spectral type catalog of Jaschek et al.(1964) to choose supergiants. Since observations were possible from bothChile and Canada, no declination limits were imposed, and no particularselection criteria were imposed other than to eliminate carbon stars. These are so red as to require enormous extrapolations of thetransformation equations.
| Masses of red giants. I - Mean initial mass from visual binary data Existing information on red-giant masses is reviewed, and an independentmethod for determining the frequency distribution of initial masses ofred giants is presented which is based on analysis of visual binarysystems containing a red giant and a main-sequence star (RG-MS systems).A list of RG-MS systems is compiled which yields an apparent frequencydistribution of the spectral types of the secondaries. This apparentdistribution is transformed to a 'true' distribution of secondary massesby accounting for certain selection effects; the true distribution isthen transformed into a distribution of initial primary masses (i.e.,initial masses of red-giant components) by assuming a form for thedistribution of mass ratios. Values in the range from 0.8 to 1.2 solarmasses and an upper limit of 1.4 solar masses are determined for themean initial masses of red giants and shown to be in satisfactoryagreement with the theoretical prediction of about 1 solar mass.
