A catalog of rotational and radial velocities for evolved stars. II. Ib supergiant stars
Rotational velocity vsin i and mean radial velocity are presented for asample of 231 Ib supergiant stars covering the spectral region F, G andK. This work is the second part of the large survey carried out with theCORAVEL spectrometer to establish the behavior of the rotation for starsevolving off the main sequence (De Medeiros & Mayor 1999). Thesedata will add constraints to the study of the rotational behavior inevolved stars, as well as solid information concerning tidalinteractions in binary systems and on the link between rotation,chemical abundance and activity in stars of intermediate masses. CCD measurements of visual double stars made with the 74 cm and 50 cm refractors of the Nice Observatory (2nd series)
We present 619 measurements of 606 visual double stars made by CCDimaging from 1996 to 1999 with the 74 cm and 50 cm refractors of theNice observatory. Angular separation, position angle and magnitudedifference are given. Magnitude differences estimated from CCD imagesare compared with magnitude differences given in the Hipparcos catalog.The residuals in angular separation and position angle are computed forbinaries with known orbit. The Physical Basis of Luminosity Classification in the Late A-, F-, and Early G-Type Stars. II. Basic Parameters of Program Stars and the Role of Microturbulence
Paper I of this series presented precise MK spectral types for 372 lateA-, F-, and early G-type stars with the aim of understanding the natureof luminosity classification on the MK spectral classification systemfor this range of spectral types. In this paper, a multidimensionaldownhill simplex technique is introduced to determine the basicparameters of the program stars from fits of synthetic spectra andfluxes with observed spectra and fluxes from Strömgren uvbyphotometry. This exercise yields useful calibrations of the MK spectralclassification system but, most importantly, gives insight into thephysical nature of luminosity classification on the MK spectralclassification system. In particular, we find that in this range ofspectral types, microturbulence appears to be at least as important asgravity in determining the MK luminosity type.

The Physical Basis of Luminosity Classification in the Late A-, F-, and Early G-Type Stars. I. Precise Spectral Types for 372 Stars
This is the first in a series of two papers that address the problem ofthe physical nature of luminosity classification in the late A-, F-, andearly G-type stars. In this paper, we present precise spectralclassifications of 372 stars on the MK system. For those stars in theset with Strömgren uvbyβ photometry, we derive reddenings andpresent a calibration of MK temperature types in terms of the intrinsicStrömgren (b-y)0 index. We also examine the relationshipbetween the luminosity class and the Strömgren c1 index,which measures the Balmer jump. The second paper will address thederivation of the physical parameters of these stars, and therelationships between these physical parameters and the luminosityclass. Stars classified in this paper include one new λ Bootisstar and 10 of the F- and G-type dwarfs with recently discoveredplanets.

Ultraviolet and Optical Studies of Binaries with Luminous Cool Primaries and Hot Companions. V. The Entire IUE Sample
We have obtained or retrieved IUE spectra for over 100 middle- andlate-type giant and supergiant stars whose spectra indicate the presenceof a hot component earlier than type F2. The hot companions areclassified accurately by temperature class from their far-UV spectra.The interstellar extinction of each system and the relative luminositiesof the components are derived from analysis of the UV and opticalfluxes, using a grid of UV intrinsic colors for hot dwarfs. We find thatthere is fair agreement in general between current UV spectralclassification and ground-based hot component types, in spite of thedifficulties of assigning the latter. There are a few cases in which thecool component optical classifications disagree considerably with thetemperature classes inferred from our analysis of UV and opticalphotometry. The extinction parameter agrees moderately well with otherdeterminations of B-V color excess. Many systems are worthy of furtherstudy especially to establish their spectroscopic orbits. Further workis planned to estimate luminosities of the cool components from the dataherein; in many cases, these luminosities' accuracies should becomparable to or exceed those of the Hipparcos parallaxes.

Classification of Population II Stars in the Vilnius Photometric System. II. Results
The results of photometric classification of 848 true and suspectedPopulation II stars, some of which were found to belong to Population I,are presented. The stars were classified using a new calibrationdescribed in Paper I (Bartkevicius & Lazauskaite 1996). We combinethese results with our results from Paper I and discuss in greaterdetail the following groups of stars: UU Herculis-type stars and otherhigh-galactic-latitude supergiants, field red horizontal-branch stars,metal-deficient visual binaries, metal-deficient subgiants, stars fromthe Catalogue of Metal-deficient F--M Stars Classified Photometrically(MDPH; Bartkevicius 1993) and stars from one of the HIPPARCOS programs(Bartkevicius 1994a). It is confirmed that high galactic latitudesupergiants from the Bartaya (1979) catalog are giants or even dwarfs.Some stars, identified by Rose (1985) and Tautvaisiene (1996a) as fieldRHB stars, appear to be ordinary giants according to our classification.Some of the visual binaries studied can be considered as physical pairs.Quite a large fraction of stars from the MDPH catalog are found to havesolar metallicity. A number of new possible UU Herculis-type stars, RHBstars and metal-deficient subgiants are identified.

Colour excesses of F-G supergiants and Cepheids from Geneva photometry.
A reddening scale for F-G supergiants and Cepheids is presented.Supergiants with low reddenings or in clusters form the basis of thecalibration. In this sense, it is entirely empirical. The data have beenobtained in the Geneva photometric system. Comparisons with otherreddening scales show no disagreement. The only problem is with Fernie'sscale for Cepheids (1990), where a systematic trend exists. Its originis not clear. It is suggested to extend the number of supergiants withindependently obtained colour excesses in order to test the existence ofa possible luminosity dependence of the calibration. A period-colourrelation for Cepheids is deduced, on the basis of the present reddeningcorrections. It gives strong support for V473 Lyr being a secondovertone pulsator.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

We publish 734 radial velocities of stars distributed in 28 fields of4x4deg. We continue the PPO series (Fehrenbach et al. 1987; Duflot etal. 1990 and 1992), using the Fehrenbach objective prism method.

Ultraviolet and optical studies of binaries with luminous cool primaries and hot companions. IV - Further IUE detections
We have obtained IUE spectra for 31 middle and late-type giant andsupergiant stars whose TD-1 fluxes or ground-based spectra indicate thepresence of a hot component, or whose radial velocities indicate anunseen component. Stellar components earlier than type F1 were detectedin 22 cases. While 20 of the hot secondaries are seen weakly in opticalspectra, two are UV discoveries: HD 58134 and HD 183864. The hotcompanions are classified accurately by temperature class from theirfar-UV spectra. The interstellar extinction of each system and therelative luminosities of the components are derived from the UV andoptical fluxes, using a new grid of UV intrinsic colors for hot dwarfs.We find that many giant stars apparently have companions which are toohot and hence too luminous for consistency with the primary's spectralclassification.

Multifrequency comparison of Cepheids and nonvariable supergiants
New IUE data and infrared J, H, K, L, and M observations have beenobtained for nonvariable yellow supergiants and the prototype classicalCepheid Delta Cephei. These data have been combined with data in theliterature to make a comparison between nonvariable yellow supergiantsand Delta Cephei from the UV through the near-IR. The supergiantsequence shows a smooth progression of energy distributions withspectral type over this extended wavelength range. The Delta Cepheienergy distributions on the descending branch of the light curve(free-fall portion of the pulsation curve) are well matched bysupergiant energy distributions with the same (B-V)(0) for most phases.At the hottest phases, however, there is some extra flux at 3000 A ascompared with the nonvariables. The Delta Cephei observation on theascending branch of the light curve ('piston' phase of the pulsationcycle) has slightly more UV light than would be predicted from eitherthe supergiant observations or the free-fall Delta Cephei phases.

Luminosities for two yellow supergiants - Nonvariables and the instability strip
The luminosities for two yellow supergiants HD 183864 and Psi And = HD223047 are determined from the IUE spectra of their hot companions. Theabsolute magnitudes of HD 183864 and HD 223047 are -2.3 and -2.1 mag,respectively, and their companions have spectral types of A0.0 V andB8.8 V. The companion of Psi And is compatible with the orbital motiontentatively detected by speckle interferometric observations. Thesupergiant luminosities are combined with the Cepheid luminositiesdetermined in the same way, and also the variables and nonvariables fromSchmidt's studies of open clusters. As found by Schmidt, the variableand nonvariable supergiants have almost no overlap in the HR diagram.The combined sample defines the locus of the helium burning blue loopsof evolutionary tracks. Because no nonvariables are found to the blue offainter Cepheids, the observed blue edge of the Cepheid region may bepartly determined by the blue loops rather than by the region ofpulsational instability.

Further IUE Detections of Hot Companions to Cool Stars
Many late-type giants and supergiants have companion stars still on theupper main sequence, but barely detectable in ground-based observations.In 1989-90 we continued our surveys of suspected hot companions with theIUE satellite. Of 32 spectrum binaries or SB1 systems observed, 25reveal clear signatures in the UV of a B or A type component. The far-UVspectra are easily classified by temperature class with respect to IUEstandard stars. Some of the more significant new results: ground UVspectrosc. HD no. V spectral type type binary? Two spectrum binaries with supposedly A-typesecondaries show no evidence of such in the UV (note b). Several othercases demonstrate a trend in our surveys: although some classificationsare confirmed, we frequently find that the IUE spectral class is hotterthan the ground estimate by 2 or more subclasses. Published observational data on the orbital characteristics of 436spectroscopic binaries, covering the period 1982-1986, are compiled intables. The data sources and the organization of the catalog are brieflydiscussed, and notes are provided for each item.

Nineteen new spectroscopic binaries and the rate of binary stars among F-M supergiants
Nineteen spectroscopic binaries (SBs) have been discovered in radialvelocity measurements made with the CORAVEL spectrophotometer on 181northern F-M supergiants. The rate of detected SBs among northern F-Msupergiants is 21 percent, without any dependence on spectral orluminosity class. The study of the binary F-M supergiants with knownorbital elements indicates that all the systems with a period smallerthan the critical value P(circ) have a nearly circular orbit. The valueof P(circ) depends on the luminosity class, being 400-600 d for class Iband 2000-7000 d for class Ia. This circularization of the orbits may bedue to the transfer of angular momentum during the phase of binary massexchange.
